Take a peek into the secret life of LEGO® Minifigures. Mandy McClaine has captured some of them on film for us to enjoy.

What do you imagine is happening in the photos in the exhibit; what are the minifigures saying? Write your caption on one of the cards provided, drop it in the bucket, and we’ll hang them up!

Minifig-Me & Coloring Table – Children’s Room

What would you look like as a LEGO® minifigure? Add hair, and color the clothes to look like you. You could even make one for every member of your family!

Coloring sheets and other activities will also be available.

Family Build – Large Meeting Room (opens at 11:00 am)

Explore your creativity with the Library’s LEGO® and DUPLO® bricks. Work alone or with someone else. What will you create?

An ordinary Lego construction worker, thought to be the prophesied 'Special', is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stasis.

12:00  – 2:00 pm – LEGO® Stop-Motion animation – Large Meeting Room

Try your hand at stop-motion animation using LEGO® bricks and minifigures.

Plasmabots for BRICKmania! at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, Massachusetts1:30 pm - Meet the Plasmabots! - Teen Workshop

Meet the Plasmabots, winners of the Research Award at the recent LEGO® FIRST Worlds Championship in St. Louis.

Hear from team members about their experience competing at the Championships. See a demonstration of their robot, and try your hand at some robot programming!

Workshops

Brickmania 2016 tower building at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, Massachusetts

1:30 – 2:30 pm – Tower Building Workshop – grades K-2 – Storytime Room

Children are encouraged to problem-solve and build creatively while constructing a tower.

Attendance is limited. Sign up online beginning Tuesday, May 30, at 7:00 pm. Phone reservations begin at 7:30 pm.

 

Brickmania 2016 robotics workshop at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, Massachusetts3:00 – 4:00 pm – Robotics Workshop – grades 3-6 – Storytime Room

This is a low impact introduction to Robotics, no previous experience or knowledge is necessary.  Students will build, program, and if time allows modify a simple robot using the LEGO WeDo system.

Attendance is limited. Sign up online beginning Tuesday, May 30, at 7:00 pm. Phone reservations begin at 7:30 pm.

 

Building Contest

Entry forms will be available at the Children’s Desk beginning Monday, May 22.

Building Contest Rules

BRICKmania! contest entry at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, MassachusettsContest rules

  • Follow the theme of “Build a Better World.”
  • Create original designs; do not use commercial kits.
  • Construction must be at least 90% bricks (LEGO® or other similar bricks). No more than 10% may be other materials (fabric, string, paper, etc).
  • Build at home, using your own bricks.
  • Tell the story of your creation. On the entry form, write a paragraph about your entry and explain how it fits the theme.
  • Enter by yourself and/or as part of a group.
  • ONE creation per individual or team.
  • Size: no larger than 10x10 inches at the base (32x32 studs).

Drop off: Entries must be delivered to the Cary Library Children’s Room on Thursday, June 1 from 2:00-8:30 pm. No entries will be accepted after Thursday, June 1. Your creation should be ready to display, with no loose parts. Please bring a completed entry form with your entry. Entry forms will be available at the Children’s Desk beginning Monday, May 22.

Pick up: Saturday, June 3 from 4:00-5:00 pm. If you are unable to pick your entry up at this time, please let us know ahead of time.

Entry categories

  • Team: a group of 2 or 3 kids (18 and under)
  • Family: a group of 2 or 3 people, including at least one adult (over 18) and at least one kid
  • Individual: ages 5-8
  • Individual: ages 9-12
  • Individual: ages 13-18

Judging

A panel of three judges will select one winner in each category. A Viewers’ Choice prize (voted on by visitors and participants during Brickmania) will also be awarded.

Criteria

  • Building skill based on entrant’s age.
  • Creativity and originality, in both your building skills and your writing.
  • Interpretation of the theme - how well does your entry represent the theme “Build a Better World.”
  • Presentation.

All possible care will be taken in the handling of entries. Entrants accept that Cary Memorial Library is not responsible for loss of, or damage to, any entry.

By entering the contest, all participants and their legal guardians agree to release the contest sponsors and Cary Memorial Library of all liability that could result from participating in the contest, attending the contest, or the awarding of contest prizes.

Photography

The contest and all participants may be photographed and videotaped. By submitting an entry into this contest, entrants and their parents/guardians hereby grant permission to Cary Memorial Library to use any photographs (names not included) of the entrant or the entrant’s submitted model for any promotional use.

By submitting an entry form and creation into this contest, entrants and their parents/guardians agree to these official rules and regulations and decisions of the judges.
