What is a Science Cafe? Basically, the Science Café concept combines science and socializing. It is a lively, informal scientific discussion, open to all, which takes place in a casual setting. Snacks and drinks, which add to the informal atmosphere, will be provided by the library.
Cary Library is very excited to have Dr. Angela Belcher as our special guest scientist for the "kickoff" of the Science Cafe series. Dr. Belcher is currently W.M. Keck Professor of Energy in Materials Science and Engineering and Biological Engineering at MIT. She is also the recipient of a MacArthur "genius grant" and was named a "climate-change hero" by Time Magazine in 2007.
Professor Belcher will describe her success in being able to direct bacteria and viruses to work with one another in new and complex ways to create materials, such as batteries and solar cells, that are more environmentally friendly than the ones humans use today. Could these new virus-built batteries eventually be used to power automobiles and other electric devices? Join us to find out all about it!
Cary Library wishes to thank Dr. Jagesh Shah, Associate Professor of Systems Biology at Harvard University, for agreeing to serve as moderator for the Science Cafe. The Science Cafe @ Cary Library is generously underwritten by the Cary Memorial Library Foundation. Thank you donors!
