A patron may have materials from other libraries sent to Cary Memorial Library in three ways: Network Transfer (used for materials owned by the Minuteman Network libraries), Virtual Catalog (used for materials owned by a consortium of Massachusetts academic and public libraries), and Interlibrary Loan (used for materials from libraries beyond the range of the other two systems).

 

Network Transfer

The Minuteman Network consists of 41 libraries (including Cary), with a combined total of over 1 million titles. Collectively, Minuteman loaned over 13.5 million items to its members last year.

To request items from the Minuteman Network:

Go to http://library.minlib.net/

  • Click on "Login to My Account" link (in the upper right corner of the screen)
  • Enter your Library Card #
  • Enter your PIN
  • Click the button "Search the Catalog"

Search for the item in the catalog. When you've found it -

  • Click on the blue "Request" button
  • Enter the pick-up location you prefer
  • The "Cancel if not filled by" date will default to one year from today. Fill in another date if desired.

How you will be notified -

  • E-mail (if you've given us your address), or
  • Mail Message

Where you pick up the item -
Requested items will be held for you at the Circulation Desk or Children's Desk at the Main Library for 8 days after notification is sent to you.

There is no charge for Network requests. There is a $1.00 fee charged for items not picked up.

Virtual Catalog

The Virtual Catalog is a resource-sharing consortium of nine Massachusetts public and academic library networks (including Minuteman), three University of Massachusetts libraries, and two state college libraries. Members have access to a combined catalog, and may borrow materials from any of the other member libraries.

To use the Virtual Catalog:

Go to http://library.minlib.net/

  • Click on the Virtual Catalog link (under the Minuteman masthead)
  • Enter your pick-up location (Lexington)
  • Enter your Library Card #
  • Click the "Start" button, and then the "Search/Request" button.

Search for the item in the catalog. When you've found it -

  • Click on "Request," and fill out the form that appears

How you will be notified -

  • E-mail (if you've given us your address), or
  • Mail Message

Where you pick up the item -
Requested items will be held for you at the Circulation Desk at the Main Library. They are charged out for 28 days, with no renewals. They must be returned to Cary Library.

There is no charge for Virtual Catalog loans. There is a $1.00 fee charged for items not picked up.


Interlibrary Loan

Use Interlibrary Loan at Cary Library to request any items you can't get through the Network or the Virtual Catalog. The Wellesley Library's Interlibrary Loan Department serves as the regional interlibrary loan center for member libraries of the Metrowest Massachusetts Regional Library System. Wellesley borrows items requested by patrons in the Metrowest region that are not available in the patron's home library system.

To use Interlibrary Loan:

Give author, title, and as much other information as you have about the item you're looking for.

How you will be notified -

  • E-mail (if you've given us your address), or
  • telephone message

Where you pick up the item -
Requested items will be held for you at the Circulation Desk at the Main Library. They are charged out for varying loan periods, determined by the owning library. Renewals are sometimes possible. Loans must be returned to Cary Library.

There is no charge for Interlibrary loans. There is a $1.00 fee charged for items not picked up.

Journal Articles

The Boston Regional Library System provides copies of journal articles that are not available through the Minuteman Network's databases. Most articles are scanned electronically and are e-mailed to the patron.

To obtain a journal article:

Contact Cary Library's Reference Department, either
  • In person, at the Reference Desk
  • By phone, at 781-862-6288 ext 250
  • By e-mail: lexill@minlib.net

Give as complete a citation as you can for the article you're requesting.

How you will be notified -
  • E-mail (if you've given us your address), or
  • telephone message

Where you pick up the item -
The article will be e-mailed to you if possible. If you do not use e-mail, or if the article arrives in paper form, you may pick it up at the Reference Desk.

There is no charge for journal article delivery. There is a $1.00 fee charged for items not picked up.
