| Mitchell's leather factory, Massachusetts Avenue about 100 below Oak Street on railroad side. "Patrick Mitchell was born in Ireland in 1819, came to the United States in 1834 and to East Lexington in 1842. The first building which he built for leather dressing was practically destroyed by a boiler explosion. The boiler went out through the roof and landed back in the meadow. He then built the building you see here and carried on the leather dressing business until 1892. Subsequently the building was used as a carriage-painting shop, then for the manufacture of snow-plows. Even an airplane was built here by a man named Hoffman. The plane was a failure. The building remained vacant for some years and was torn down 1939. Picture taken 1882." |
