| Description |
George O. Smith house, looking down Massachusetts Avenue.
"Today nothing but the barn remains and that have been remodeled into a house, number 561. When Massachusetts Avenue was widened in 1889 this curve was cut back so that the new street line ran through the centre of the house, necessitating its removal. You will recall that Massachusetts Avenue was cut through to Concord in 1636. Not a single highway bound on its entire length in Lexington was established until 1888. We got along quite comfortably for 250 years without knowing exactly where the street was!" |
