| The Great Meadow, flooded. "This view is from back of Miss Gertrude Pierce's house looking toward the "Island" and shows how the meadow looked when it was flooded. The Town of Arlington took over the meadow and the land around it about 1877. Built two dams and used the impounded water for their town supply. The water was shallow for the most part except where peat had been dug but the mud was very deep and dangerous. All the boats on the meadow were home-made, flat-bottomed, pointed at one end and propelled by poling. Pond lillies grew in great profusion and I have brought in 1,000 blossoms at one time. The place abounded in turtles, hornpout and great black snakes, and in spring and fall there were quite a few game birds. It made a great playground for us summer and winter, even if it was dangerous. Peat factory." |
