Engraving of Lexington Common, about 1795.
"The earliest picture giving any authentic details as to Lexington Common is the rare Doolittle print of the Battle. Doolittle personally drew the scene and made the print in the summer of 1795. In 1794, the "Gentlemen's Magazine" London, engaged a very well-known Boston engraver to visit and engrave a series of American views. In this series he included Lexington Common. His view is almost identical with this picture. There is only a slight variance in the angle from which the picture was made.
This is from a photograph of a painting, I feel sure, but where the painting is, or who owns it, or whether it is sill in existence I do not know. The photograph was made in 1916. The view must be decidedly authentic."
