"No one knows the age of this house, but it dates long before the Revolution. Here lived Jonathan Harrington, killed April 19, 1775. Later, in 1800, John Augustus lived here. He was a prominent man in the State - a leader in work for the "down and outs," whom he brought here to Lexington to assist in rebuilding their lives. I find in some years he paid poll taxes for 35 men. Next it was occupied by Mr. Chittenden. He with his partner Burr made clocks. For many years James Gould and his daughter Sarah carried on a greenhouse business here. There was a considerable ell to the house which was removed when Mr. Leroy Brown remodeled the house."
