Preparations on Lexington Common for Centennial celebration, 1875.
"Most of you have heard of the celebration April 19, 1875 when the weather was so cold that the food in the tent on the Common froze on the tables. It is estimated that 100,000 people were here that day. Traffic was so heavy that carriages blocked the road as far down as Arlington Heights. Special trains of 10 cars each couldn't accommodate the crowds. Even the tops of cars were covered with passengers. General Grant and his staff were hours late in getting through from Concord." |
