| Residence of George W. Taylor, Bedford Street between Revere Street and Larchmont Lane. "George W. Taylor was born in England - arrived in Lexington 1867, married next year Julia Willis. Lived at number ? Massachusetts Avenue for a number of years. Built this house in 1899, subsequently adding a large ballroom or banquet hall at the north side. House torn down in 1942. For a time he kept a little drygoods store in the old Savings Bank building and then went into the insurance business. He entered local politics in 1902 and built around the fire department, with its considerable list of volunteer members, a formidable machine. It was quite a new idea in small town politics and during his active political years divided the town into two factions. He had some following among his social equals but his following was mostly from the fire department, town laborers, etc. who were not interested in ethics. It was but natural he became roundly hated by many people." |
