Masonic Building, nearer view, pre-1875.
"This is a nearer view of the Masonic Building at the time it was occupied by the Hancock Church (in 1868). Their last service in this building was held August 27, 1893. I have not the date of this picture but it must be at a very early date - soon after the Society completed their remodeling of the building.
At the right is a corner of the Hinchey house, and beyond a house not yet completed. No house can be seen which would be that ancient building. What was it? My theory is this: In the 1850s Mr. David A. Tuttle lived further up Hancock Street and his carpenter shop was about where Hayes Avenue now is. He moved that shop to Number 24 Hancock Street and he and his descendants have lived there ever since. I think, from the bare appearance of the building, that it is the shop before it was pushed back onto the foundations.
If my theory is correct. it would date this picture well before 1875."
