Hancock-Clarke House, rear view, 1890.
"Views of the Hancock-Clarke House on its original location are quite common, but they are all front view. Here is a very different view showing the ell and shed. This picture must have been taken in the 1880s for the house does not present the dilapidated appearance of its last years before the Historical Society purchased it in 1896 and moved it across the street. In that tiny ell with its two dormer windows lighting two small chambers the Reverend John Hancock raised his family of five children and brought up his nephew (grandson) John, the signer of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of Massachusetts." |
