| Description |
Close-up view down Massachusetts Avenue from Lexington Common, 1890.
"This is a view from the tip of the Common down Massachusetts Avenue and gives an excellent view of the Center as it looked in 1885. On the left are the old chestnut trees and the wall on the Buckman Tavern grounds. Beyond is the Central Block, or rather "Norris Block," for Mr. John L. Norris built it in 1871 (1874). On the right are the houses where the library now stands, the old village store, about where the [library] bulletin board now stands, the second Monument House, and then the three houses just below Muzzey Street.
A quiet, attractive, peaceful village, one dear to the memory of our older residents." |
