"The little knoll where the monument stands is school-house hill for here, in 1714, the first school-house was erected and was so used until 1796. The monument is, as you know, the first revolutionary monument erected in the United States. Erected and paid for by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1799.
So little do we realize these changes it may surprise you to know that all the great trees you see in the picture have been taken down."
