Description
Houses near High School playground, 1909. "These two houses stood on the lower side of the High School on the lot now used as a playground. The one on the right was occupied for many years by Mr. John D. Bacon. The one on the left accommodated two families and had many tenants. It must have been an old house, dating back to the early 1800s. Like many others my age I have kindly memories of Mr. Bacon. He never told on us boys or complained. He kept hens and it was always a good trick to steal a hen or small rooster, stuff the bird under one's vest and smuggle it into school and there let the bird go. Another good trick was to grab one of Mr. Russell's pet rabbits and smuggle it into school. But a frightened hen or rooster really was the best."
