Munroe Tavern, 1859.
"Munroe Tavern. This view may be of special interest to some of you. It is the Munroe Tavern as it looked many years ago. The old small windows - two in a room - have been replaced with a single large window, and notice the two additions on the side torn down. Munroe Tavern has this connection with Arlington. In it Hiram Lodge of Masons was instituted December 12, 1797 and they continued to meet here for many years before moving to Arlington. The lodge meetings were held in the larger addition as that contained a hall on the second floor. The shed-like part was built to accommodate the bar and the tavern keeper, leaving the room entirely for the use of those who patronized the bar.
William Munroe was proprietor of the Tavern in 1775 and at his death in 1827 his son Jonas succeeded him. this picture was taken in 1859 and shows Jonas Munroe aged 81 seated by the door. At his left is one of his sons, either William or James S."
