Reverend Carleton A. Staples, 1846.
"Born at Mendon MA in 1827. Came to Lexington as Minister of Unitarian Church in 1881, which he held until his death in 1904. He was educated as a school teacher as well as minister, gave up his parish in the west and enlisted as a chaplain in the Civil War.
A delightful man - solid with all the New England virtues - full fun, interested in everybody and in everything pertaining to Lexington. A true "pastor of his flock." To him, Lexington owes much - for he revived the lost regard for our historic background, saved the Hancock-Clarke House from destruction, rescued the Battle Green from being a hayfield and baseball diamond - and is responsible for all historic markers throughout the town.
A large man physically, long white hair down to his shoulders, he was really from a former generation. We shall not see his like again."
