| Description |
Gardner Babcock.
"Civil War veteran. Postmaster 1867 to 1890. Also served terms as Town Clerk, Tax Collector. Active in local dramatics, full of fun. His store, in the block at upper corner of Depot Park, was the welcome headquarters for all the boys. The telephone service was installed in Lexington in 1892. In announcing this service, the local paper says: anyone having occasion to use the telephone will find it conveniently located in the rear of Babcock's store on Main Street. The only telephone in Lexington."
