| Alice Butler Cary. "The Hastings Family came to Lexington about 1750 and built a home on Shade Street somewhat south of the present Cary mansion. They were a very prominent family in the town. In 1821, Jonathan Cary married, for his third wife, Abigail Hastings and in 1827 moved from Charlestown to Lexington, building a home quite near the Hastings homestead. In 1828 his youngest brother, William Hastings, married his brother's wife's sister, Maria Cary. William became a very wealthy New York merchant but kept the homestead here in Lexington for a summer residence. They took a great interest in Lexington. Mrs. Cary gave the first library - that is, the books - and she also provided the extra money needed to build the old town hall opposite Waltham Street. They had no children but took into their house Alice Butler and this is her picture. Miss Cary carried on in the fine tradition and as she always lived here she knew everyone and gave generously to all needy persons and to every worthy cause. She gave to the town the present Cary Memorial Library building. And it is especially interesting to know that the daughters of Isaac Cary, brother of Jonathan and William, and who never lived in Lexington, carried out the family tradition in giving the town the Cary Memorial Building, provided a trust fund which is assisting 30 and 35 Lexington boys every year to go to college and also providing for the Cary Lectures and Concerts." |
