World War II.
This is a collection of photographs and negatives from the period of World War II that show different aspects of life in Lexington on the home front during wartime.
Scrap metal was collected for the war effort, as the scrap piles in different locations, including the Barnes property from 1942 show. Edwin B. Worthen was involved in the civil defense effort, and documented its work including the training. In a few photographs, volunteers learn how to dowse fires. In other images, there is a plane spotting tower in camouflage, located off Hill Street, (Robinson's Hill) in North Lexington.From this tower Worthen took panoramic photographs in all directions, including toward Boston. Also in the folder are some photographs of the War Service Bulletin from 1944, and a sign board in front of the Cary Memorial Building, that faces Massachusetts Avenue.
