Description Lexington Center stores and businesses, 1888.

"The building on the left is that lately occupied by Lester E. Smith, now numbered 1770-1774 Mass. Ave. Upstairs was Seminary Hall to which I have previously referred. The building on the right is the old Savings Bank Building now moved to the rear of our present bank building. In it Lyman Lawrence had his harness store and George W. Taylor began his business career with a small store of dry goods and notions. Both buildings were erected around 1840.

Notice the street light - and that the street itself was not so wide, for between the gutter - no curbstone - and the store there was ample room for two teams to pass. This picture was taken about 1888."
