Letter to Cary Library Patrons from Director Koren Stembridge

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Dear Cary Library Patrons,

I am delighted to report that the Cary Memorial Library Foundation has nearly completed their Transformative Spaces fundraising campaign and that construction will be taking place this summer as planned. I want to offer my sincere thanks to everyone in the community who contributed to this project and to the Foundation for their hours of work to help us meet this timeline. I’d also like to acknowledge the library staff for their work reimagining the library.

Our highest priority when planning for the construction phase of this project has been to minimize library closures.  We will do our best to make collections and services available for as many hours as possible. This letter will give you a general overview of what you can expect this summer – but as many of you know from personal experience, construction projects seldom adhere to their original timelines! Your patience is appreciated.

For the most up-to-date information about library hours and services, we encourage you to check our blog (carylibrary.org/updates), follow us on social media, or call the Library’s main number at 781.862.6288.

Our general expectations for the summer:

  • During periods where library furniture, shelving and collections are being moved, we will need to be closed for stretches of time to ensure public safety.  We plan to open the building (on these M-TH when we are closed during the day) from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. so you can pick up holds and museum passes and so that you can browse for materials.
  • During the project, we will extend the number of days we hold reserve materials to 10 days.
  • Beginning Monday, June 20th, we will not be reserving study rooms. What study rooms are available will be “first come, first served” (2 hour limit/day) with sign-up sheets posted on the door of each study room. The Mezzanine Study Room will not be available during the construction project.
  • We will have a Summer Reading Program this summer – but our programming will be scaled back significantly due to the project. For more information about expected impacts on summer programming in the Children’s Room, please check the Letter to Lexington Families. Please subscribe to the Children’s Newsletter or follow us on social media for the latest information about “pop up” activities for children and teens.
  • Public meeting rooms and the Commons will be offline for periods of the summer to serve as temporary spaces for staff and collections during construction.

Beginning in June:

  • We will begin moving some furniture in preparation for construction. You may notice that your favorite chair is missing. Please touch base with staff for direction to items in new temporary locations.  We will post signage to help direct you.

Library Hours June 20-27 (ABBREVIATED SCHEDULE to facilitate furniture/shelving moves):

Monday, June 20: Open 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. (normal hours)
Tuesday, June 21: Open 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday, June 22: Open 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 23: Open 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Friday, June 24: CLOSED
Saturday, June 25: Open 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. (normal hours)
Sunday, June 26: CLOSED
Monday, June 27: Open 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

  • The adult program, Mass Incarceration and the New Jim Crow, scheduled for June 21st at 7 p.m. will continue as advertised.

“Phase 1” construction begins on June 27, 2016:

  • Construction begins on Main Level. This portion of the project includes the new study rooms, Idea Wall, computer space, Community Programming Office and Library of Things.
  • Construction work will take place during normal library hours so please expect noise.
  • Construction updates will be available on easels at both entrances and on the Library’s construction blog.
  • We encourage you to check our website (carylibrary.org/updates) or social media before coming to the library - just in case we’ve had to close unexpectedly.
  • We do not expect significant closures during this phase (but as with all construction projects things may be unpredictable).

Late July or early August closure:

There will be a period of approximately 2 weeks at the end of July or early in August when the library will be closed to move shelving, collections, and furniture. We plan to open the building (on these M-TH when we are closed during the day) from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. so you can pick up holds and museum passes and so that you can browse for materials. We will advertise those dates once they are firm.

“Phase 2” construction begins in mid-August:

  • Construction continues on the Main Level and begins on the Lower Level. This portion of the project includes a new service desk/self-check area as well as the new Teen Space.
  • Construction work will be happening during normal library hours so please expect noise.
  • Construction updates will be available on easels at both entrances and on the library’s website.
  • We encourage you to check our website (carylibrary.org/updates) or social media before coming to the library - just in case we’ve had to close unexpectedly.

Project completed in mid-September:

There will be one final period (approximately one week) where shelving, collections, and furniture will need to be moved. We plan to open the building (on M-TH when we are closed during the day) from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. so you can pick up holds and museum passes and so that you can browse for materials. We will advertise those dates once they are firm.

Thank you for bearing with us while we transform! If you have questions, please direct them to me at kstembridge@lexingtonma.gov or by phone at 781.862.6288 x316.
