Service Updates Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long will the library be closed?
The library is closed until further notice. Please check the library’s blog webpage carylibrary.org/service-updates [1], for updates as to when it will reopen.
What happens to my Cary Out pickup if it's snowing?
In case of severe winter weather, pickup services may be cancelled. Check for updates and announcments. If service is cancelled, please call the library when we reopen to reschedule your pickup.
I received a notification for an item I have still checked out but I cannot return it right away.
If you receive an automated notice about items still checked out, no need to rush out to return them. Rest assured that we will continue to waive fines.
Can I return library items while the library is closed?
Yes. We are ready to accept returns. There are book drops located at the front and the back of the building that are open. Please note that it may take several days for your items to be removed from your account.
What if I am not comfortable going out to return library items?
Not a problem. You can return the items when the library reopens and the library will not be assessing any library fines.
Will I get a fine for returning library items late?
No. No library fines will be assessed.
I think my library card expired as I'm having difficulty and/or not able to access online resources.
The Minuteman Library Network has extended expiration dates on library cards to ensure access during this time. Please use the Ask a Librarian [3] form and include your name and library card number so that we can look at what is going on with your library card. A staff member will be in contact with you as soon as possible.
Can I still reserve a museum pass?
Cary Library is now offering passes for venues [4] that provide a "print at home” or online option.
I returned library items via the book drop and they are still showing up on my library card account.
During the closure, it will take a longer time for library items to be checked-in from patron’s accounts. Read about our Quarantine Procedure [5] to learn more. Note that when these items are checked-in no library fines will be assessed.
I depended on the library for WiFi and I don’t have WiFi at home.
Cary Library’s WiFi extends outdoors beyond the library’s walls. Feel free to sit outside the library or park in the library’s parking lot to use the Wifi. The network is “CML-Public” and the password is “libraryweb.” Please be sure to follow appropriate social distancing guidelines by staying six feet away from your fellow wifi users.
What online resources are available from home with my library card?
Visit our Online Resources [6] page for topics or an alphabetical list of databases and other resources available. Borrow, ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and streaming video from Overdrive and the Libby app in our eBooks & Digital Media [7] page.
What if I don't have a library card?
Register online for a temporary Minuteman library card [8]. Just note that resources for Lexington residents only are unavailable until we verify your address when the library reopens. If you are a Massachusetts resident and don't already have a Boston Public Library card, you can register online for a Boston Public Library eCard [9] to access their online resources as well.
I have a question about my account. Is there anyone that can help me?
If you have any questions about your account or how to access digital resources please use the Ask a Librarian [3] form. A staff member will respond as quickly as possible.
What about library programs?
All library programs are now happening virtually. You can view all of these opportunities on Program Calendar [10].
The best place to start is the Town of Lexington’s “COVID-19 State of Emergency” page [12] and the Lexington Public Schools’ COVID-19 page [13]. We also recommend the Lex Help page [14] which is a great resource for finding help for, or giving help to, those in need.
